--there _is_ something to be said about how viewers are --conditioned to be skeptical of excessively slick production. there is truth in this but I'm not sure if i entirely agree with it... part of a trust in a media source is surely generated from our knowledge of the producer (and their reputation).. in Levinson's words 'the gatekeepers' If you read something in the New York TImes you're more likely to take it as fact than if you read it in your local paper... both printed on paper, both using black ink, both having 'quality' layouts. This reputation can be abused (e.g. by The New York Times!), but it holds the majority of the time. We're already seeing gatekeepers forming in the world of vlogging. There is way too much material to see it all, (the same way there is too much news to fit in a newspaper) so we start looking to the vloggers we trust to provide us with their favourite feeds. Reputations get built and we begin to create a new media hierarchy, whether or not this a bad thing I'm not sure, but it definitely feels like it is an eternal cycle that begins every time a new medium appears (oh.. i feel like a doomsayer now.. even though i am really really excited by vlogging and deep down i hope it will lead to some kind of seismic shift!) ---videobloggers on the whole -- through... Re: watching video blogs SHOULDN'T be easy as watching TV

this is an interesting discussion but i think we've got a bit lost down the technical possibilities and we're missing some key experiential points here.... vlogs shouldn't be as 'easy' as television.. .. the difference between tv and vlogs is television is a one way medium (barring phone ins and those 'oh so exciting' voting options and multiple angles on 'interactive tv' ) it's also a shared experience.. you can easily watch tv with a group of people, computers still don't have this position in our lives, they are based around the single user model (even though we will sometimes gather a few people around a machine to watch something) If you step out of the domain of ' heavy' computer users and look at a family situation (for example).. the television sits in the lounge (or living room) and the computer sits in bedrooms or workspaces.. will still divide the two. In terms of technology our televisions have more and more computing power inside them but they are still a passive (i.e. easy) experience. We choose channels but not content, and we don't have any input into that content, and we can;t easily pass that content on to other people. The talk at the moment seems to be 'lets put vlogs on tv' ... essentially to me this translates as ' i want to make television' .. as soon as we move in this direction then the whole thing... my two pence (or cents) it feels weird to mention a length as part of the definition.... do we define a photograph by how large it is? wikipedia says a feature film is one over 60min in length.. so should we break vlogs up into different categories? e.g. under 1 min, over 10 min? i'm not sure it's reached a point where we can us time as a definition so easily.. i mean has anyone actually recorded the length of every vlog out there and taken an average? on this note i was wondering about ryanne's categories "here i am, this is me" "work" "what are we doing?" "our kids" "welcome to the future" there doesn't seem to be one that just covers everyday life captured by the vlogger that's not of themselves (admitting the fact that this is my area of interest so i'm biased!!) > to some, a videoblog is the actual video and to others, > especially geeks, it is about all the moving parts and the big picture. > somewhere in between may lie some pure logic i like this definition.. but maybe without the words 'especially geeks', that feels a bit mean!! -- duncan speakman http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com [View]

it sounds like he's best off getting an external hard drive... you can pick= up 80Gb ones for around 60quid (sorry.. 60 pounds sterling) here .. i gues= s they're the same or cheaper in the states? it would mean fast access to s= tuff for review.. ignoring the general ranting of the rocketboom review i think we do need to= get a 'little' bit more critical about each others vlogs... we're still a= ll in such awe of this stuff and at the moment we seem to be in a little bi= t of a 'i'll comment on the ones i love .. etc etc' mode, the only time som= eone writes negative things they tend to be really slating and generally us= eless (see. Rocketboom review as a prime example) ... some sense of critic= al feedback (i.e. positive critique NOT 'reviews') would be a good thing fo= r the vlogging world in general (and i don;t just mean people suggesting di= fferent codecs, even though it's useful input sometimes) .... (as a case = in point - i love rocketbooms commodore style keyboard.. i think it adds a= great sense of knowing cheek to this (curently) techy medium. and it works= as a running gag but i think it runs the risk or wearing it's own humour o= ut if it's pushed for too long.. no pun intended) On 6/8/05, Joshua Kinbe= rg <jkinberg@...> wrote: > Eh, no worries. ok... so i'm using feedburner at the moment because it was free and easy fo= r a newbie!! .. i'm not worried about the stat reporting but clint's point = about the business model and what it will potentially lead to in the future= seems valid (and prophetic? ;) ) SO.... i'm currently planning to ditch my= current hosting service (demon.net in the uk.. really reliable but oh sooo= o expensive for what you get) and move somewhere cheaper.. dreamhost looks = like a fairly good bet (a few people on the list seem to use it) and it app= ears easy to use wordpress with it... i'm a sort of half geek- really geek= y about audio/video btu not hot on web stuff... so if i make the changover= successfully i'll try to clearly document it and post the steps in the mos= t non-techy way i can!!!!
