qt or divx to reach ppl

November 7, 2004 | Post #1658 | Topic #1658

right now im encoding at lowest quality in divx 5.0.5 format ive noticed that most other vid ppl here dont do divx, they do apple quicktime (sorenson codec?! guessing here, doesnt matter anyway) im wondering if it would be better to offer vidz in qt, and embed them in my page (so its part of the site and not a seperate download) i would not automatically make them start though, so you would have to press the play button anyway theres my ish ro [View]

> http://pearqt.sourceforge.net/ I just checked out the php source from the cvs repository (non-total-geeks can stop reading now ;D) it looks like it is php code to generate quicktime tags: the same tags that are inserted into your html. its further complexitized by the fact that they also generate the javascript that does a document.write() of the html tags because they thought that because of the eolas patent dispute with embedded objects they would have to resort to these kinds of hacks since ie6 was going to be changed in early 2004 (never did happen and now microsoft says it wont ever). the nifty things that i found from it: makes a binary qt movie that references another: function makeRefMovie($qturl) { $n = strlen($qturl); header('Content-type: video/quicktime'); echo pack('Na4Na4Na4Na4xxxxa4Na*x', $n+45, 'moov', $n+37, 'rmra', $n+29, 'rmda', $n+21, 'rdrf', 'url ', $n+1, $qturl); } didnt quite understand what this does: function getQTLink() see the cvs source for more details: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/pearqt/Quick Time/class.quicktime.php?rev=1.13&view=auto this is also cool (passing dynamic data to your quicktime video, which could be cool if you add script inside your quicktime video using the apple tools -- i have no experience in this tho): notice this: moviename="<This is an embed tag moviename>" from: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/pearqt/Quick Time/tests/movienametest.html?rev=1.1&view=auto and now the video that has the dynamic text: (i think!?): http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/pearqt/Quick Time/tests/movienametest.mov?rev=1.1&view=auto ro [View]

TADA the internet archive has solved our bandwidth and storage requirements (too good to be true!?) --> so now all the video message board has to do is reference the video files on the internet archive instead of storing it locally. im going to post in a seperate message about figuring out what vid format to use for true interchange; what vid format to actually upload to the internet archive. ro [View]

vid format for interchange

November 9, 2004 | Post #1700 | Topic #1700

please note that i am NOT a video expert by any means, just a mild mannered geek with an obsession ideal vid format: o open standard, thus supported by many different tools o free encoding tools (once you have the video you can encode to this format with ease) low barrier to entry in this vid world o very very good compression well the bandwidth and storage problem seems to be handled by internet archive, so lets go with that assumption, but we still want very small files -- of course! i assume that macs have quicktime i assume that windows have windows media player i want people to have to install AS LITTLE software as possible to view vids. software installation is a goddamn headache for everyone most people on windows who view movies on their pc's have divx on them already, but quicktime barfs on some divx vids true mpeg4 (not mpeg4 variants like divx) seems the way to go, since it plays by default in quicktime6 on mac's and it plays in windows media player (so im told, i have to double check on a brand new windows installation, mine has codecs already loaded). so what encodes to mpeg4? ppl have mentioned 3ivx, but that costs money to encode to that format. xvid? looks free, but all the stuff i found on the net is wayyy too geeky, way over my head. lets go with xvid since... > so how would this threaded video message board work using the Internet Archive"? > i dont undersatnd the format of it. > explain the process well a usual message board, except instead of posts where text is, is a vid link and some text (optional text). the vid link is given to you when you upload to internet archive. its the link to your video on the internet archive's servers. I'm not sure what text links in quicktime you're referring to. When I play your autumn movie I see the video and at the end a link to your website and thats it. Am I missing something? I changed to qt 6.5.2 (windows installer) and i can see the text track fine now. qt is flaky on windows, random behavior apparent, like you noticed with having to reboot because of intermittent non-functioning of the text track. ah well.
