I just signed up yesterday, found this group while researching videobloggin= g. I am not (so far) a blogger, I prefer to publish an e-newsletter and "fu= ll blown" website, since that's what I do professionally (among other thing= s). But I got curious about how people are publishing video online and want= ed to try some things myself, so here I am. I'm an American living in Lec= co, on beautiful Lake Como, in Italy. And if you're dying to know more abou= t me, there's plenty on my site! No videos as yet, I'm working on it. bes= t regards, Deirdr=E9 Straughan http://www.straughan.com [View]

Okay, I did it, and described how I did it, on http://www.straughan.com/tec= h/video.htm Not exactly blog material, but a clip I'm very fond of, for re= asons that become clear at the bottom of the page. I'll have to ask my daughter (she's 15 now), but I think they just told the subjects to smile, and told jokes to make them smile or laugh. Or at least that's what they did with the kids. They filmed a bunch of kids at her school, probably because it was very multi- racial for Milan. I realize the clip is very bandwidth-hungry, and tried compressing it for smaller bandwidth, but didn't like the results. Video of Italy coming up soon, I think. I should get my hands on a camera today, and this weekend we're taking off for Tuscany. Ciao, D' [View]

This one's a bit more bloggy, see http://www.straughan.com/vlog/072004.htm And I've created a new section on my site for video. In the next few days I'll experiment some more with size vs. quality issues. Then we'll be hitting the road, so you won't hear from me for a week, but when I get back I should have some good stuff to share! Ciao, D' [View]

> what's stopping it? > first, let's list the obstructions. - Bandwidth, u= pdstream and down. Let's do some stats: what bandwidth does everyone in thi= s group have? I have DSL, I think 650 kbps downstream, much less than that = upstream. Upstream becomes important when you want to post video in a hurry= - my little 5 MB video files take about 5 minutes to post. - Bandwidth fo= r sharing. We're in a weird catch-22 where, if our videos actually become p= opular, we end up paying for others to see them (Steve, you must be taking = a huge hit? Or are Fox viewers incapable of finding you online? <grin>). Th= e economics of this is backwards - if you're providing incentive for someon= e to use bandwidth, the bandwidth provider should be kissing your feet, not= charging you! - Ease of use. It's too hard right now, too many formats to= know about, too many different bits of software you have to use (if you do= it my way). - Cost. It's a very tiny (and simple) part of what Flash can do. Maybe Macromedia c= ould be enticed to release a low-cost piece of software that does only that= ?
