Hello I'm Chris Weagel, an independent video artist, just outside Detroit MI. I run http://www.human-dog.com and since January 13 of this year I've been video blogging, the entries of which can be seen here: http://www.human-dog.com/exper/journal1.html I post a new video every tuesday, and maintain a limited (roughly 6 weeks) archive of the video posts. It's limited because there are other non-vidblog videos on the site which require the server space. The posts are in a mix of QT and MP4 formats, and can all be viewed with Quicktime. Let me know what you think. Chris Weagel http://www.human-dog.com [View]

My process for posting vidblogs isn't too complicated, but it's not really geared towards any specific vidblogging protocol or process. I shoot a bunch of footage over the course of a week. Most of the time I like to have a central idea for each entry, sometimes I happen to stumble onto something. Other times, I re-edit or experiment with video from other projects. I then capture the footage into Final Cut Pro 4 on a G5 mac, edit it and otherwise arrange it to my liking. Then I export using Apple's Compressor, with usually the MP4 broadband preset, sometimes a QT preset. Occasionally I make up my own MP4 settings, but the stock presets seem to work OK. Then I set up the html on the blog and upload the file. That's it. As far as philosophy on vidblogging? I come from a videomaking background, so my eye is towards that end. While I think there is a good deal of value in seeing and hearing a blogger deliver their entry, I think many experienced text bloggers that have tried a video blog have blown it. Sure there may be times when seeing the blogger's talking head sitting at his/her computer is appropriate, but it's missing out on the full potential. Video is about seeing, it's about the imagery, and it's about providing something that simple text cannot deliver. Getting the process of vidblogging to be easier/faster is great,... [View]

The setting I use most in Compressor: Name: MPEG-4 Improved NTSC Large Progressive-Copy Description: 320x240,29.9fps,768kbps,44k 128kbps audio File Extension: mp4 Audio Encoder Format: MPEG4 Sample Rate: 44.100kHz Channels: 1 Bits Per Sample: 16 AAC encoder quality: high Video Encoder Format: MPEG4 Width: 320 Height: 240 Pixel aspect ratio: default Crop: None Frame rate: 15 ISMA Profile: 1 Constant bit rate: 1024 (Kbps) Which differs from the preset only in the audio being mono instead of stereo. Occasionally I'll use straight QT, but that will result in a bigger file size unless the video is short and not too visually noisy. I'm not sure what if any QT specific things Compressor adds in here, but with the files working in Real Player, I'm sure it's not adding much if anything. (That was a fun ride of a sentence) I've only ever used an older version of Cleaner for any other compression. I'd like to see what Squeeze offers, or as someone mentioned, 3ivx. What is that and where can I find that? What improvements in the mp4 will that give me? chris [View]
