This one's a bit more bloggy, see http://www.straughan.com/vlog/072004.htm And I've created a new section on my site for video. In the next few days I'll experiment some more with size vs. quality issues. Then we'll be hitting the road, so you won't hear from me for a week, but when I get back I should have some good stuff to share! Ciao, D' [View]

i really like how you explain how you made the blog, the process. its still way too difficult for the common person who just knows email. ive never seen anyone post like this. maybe the Dane. you use flash in Dreamweaver. its kind of cool how the video plays as soon as you load the site. unstoppable. Technology in general is way too hard. true. that's my goal in this discussion group is to figure out how to make this videoblogging technology available to anyone. THEN, get people to videoblog. wouldnt that be amazing if you could go on the internet and video was everywhere? from all over the world? funny serious and weird I said this to a friend of mine who just assumed it was possible.(it's not) what's stopping it? first, let's list the obstructions. then find our way through them. i like that you put video into your website. but for most people, blogs are such an easy thing. -- Jay Dedman Manhattan Neighborhood Network 537 West 59th NY NY 10019 212 757 2670 ext.312 http://www.mnn.org [View]

I also enjoy the instantaneous initialization of the vlog. I've toyed with the idea for my own, but since I frequently have multiple vidblogs featured on the same page, it would becaome a noisy cacophany rather quickly. As well, several of my users complain if I take over their audio control without their asking (the pansies). But I do find the in-window display of the vlog refreshing - as I don't always have the patience for QuickTime or WMP to load. Good jorb out there. Deidre, I should also be working on standard VCR-style buttons over the next month. If I beat you to the punch, I'll send you the appropriate .fla with all the necessary Action Scripting. Currently, I only have simplistic controls that appear at the end of my vidblogs. The Dane [View]

> what's stopping it? > first, let's list the obstructions. - Bandwidth, u= pdstream and down. Let's do some stats: what bandwidth does everyone in thi= s group have? I have DSL, I think 650 kbps downstream, much less than that = upstream. Upstream becomes important when you want to post video in a hurry= - my little 5 MB video files take about 5 minutes to post. - Bandwidth fo= r sharing. We're in a weird catch-22 where, if our videos actually become p= opular, we end up paying for others to see them (Steve, you must be taking = a huge hit? Or are Fox viewers incapable of finding you online? <grin>). Th= e economics of this is backwards - if you're providing incentive for someon= e to use bandwidth, the bandwidth provider should be kissing your feet, not= charging you! - Ease of use. It's too hard right now, too many formats to= know about, too many different bits of software you have to use (if you do= it my way). - Cost. It's a very tiny (and simple) part of what Flash can do. Maybe Macromedia c= ould be enticed to release a low-cost piece of software that does only that= ? If/when I find a way to put controls on each video, it would be possible= to have multiple blogs on one page, and the viewer can start one at a time= . LiveStage pro has a pile of automatic scripts for this, which i guess is what you get from using a program that only talks qt :-) if i find the movie i'll try to make it available for those who want more control over qt movies (doesn't help the flash workers, though the best custom controllers in qt are written in flash then imported into qt). cheers Adrian Miles ................................................................. hypertext.rmit || hypertext.rmit.edu.au/adrian interactive networked video || hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vog research blog || hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vog/vlog/ [View]

How > do you let people know it's there? you nailed all the obstacles on the head. --bandwidth and storage is a problem that could be fixed with setting up our own server. servers are fairly cheap but just takes organization. Peter has done research into this and its doable. he's even figured out a way that limits bandwidth depending on how much bandwidth a particularly popular video is using. --we do need an all-in-one videoblogging tool that edits, compresses, and posts. until this happens, videobloggibg is for the geeks or very commited artists. Peter says he can imagine a browser based tool: a SMIL editor, an opensource and server-side compressor, and a blog tool. this way anyone could videoblog from any kind of computer, mac/PC. --as far as publicity, I think it's a process. First we need video to advertise. Many people in the group are just beginning to post video, if at all. but the good thing is we're building a community here. we're still asking the most basic questions and answering them by DOING it. The DANE has been posting video once a week for 4 years. he seems to have gathered a pretty good crowd. if you build it, they will come. mad corny but true. -- Jay Dedman Manhattan Neighborhood Network 537 West 59th NY NY 10019 212 757 2670 ext.312 http://www.mnn.org [View]

if Im can ask...who is your server and how much do you pay per month? for 8.95 per month, Typepad gives me 100MB storage and 3GB bandwidth per month. they havent been keeping track until a couple days ago. I like the simple posting process....but they're server is very very slow. Just to clear something up, though I have been blogging for four years, I have only been actively posting video for a year now. My model resembles, in small fashion, that of television programming. I'm posting a new vidblog every week for thirty episodes. This consistency will account for one season. After a break - so I don't go crazy - I begin a new season of thirty episodes. So yeah, like tv seasons - but with more consistency and no repeats. [View]

FTP video to 1&1 FTP HTML page that surrounds video to 1&1 POST entry to TypePad with image Change link surrounding image to refer to Video URL Duplicate image link code In the copy replace the IMG to a text description of the video And that's the simple explanation!
